Storytelling for Marketing: Which Platform Should I Use?

We’ve made it to the end of the Art of Storytelling series. {At least until I think of a sequel or prequel!} Up to this point we have focused on the story. This last segment is about the actual platforms. I point out some of the similarities and differences. My sincere hope is you will choose one or two platforms to pilot. Figure out what is going to work best for you and your customer base. Since all of the platforms are always evolving, details of the differences may change. I’ll do my best to update the post as that happens. If you notice a change, I’d love to hear from you! You can reach me pretty much everywhere:

What's the Difference Between Instagram Stories, Instagram Live and Facebook Live?

Permanency

How long do your stories stick around when you post?

Snapchat was set up for your stories to self-destruct after 24 hours. This was initially part of the appeal. You can save your snaps to memories

Instagram Live disappears immediately and does not give you the option to save. This changed before I even hit publish! Instagram just announced on Wednesday that you can now save your stories to your camera roll!

Instagram Stories evaporate after 24-hours as well. However, you do have the choice to save the snippets to your camera roll and save for later.

Facebook Live keeps the video and leaves it in your feed for people to view later.

Privacy

Who can/will see me on Instagram Live, Facebook Live, Snapchat?

Snapchat is fundamentally a private conversation platform. Your friends/followers see your snaps. You can open this up to the public, but it’s unlikely many will see it.

Instagram Stories-As long as you have your profile set to public, anyone who stumbles upon your account can view your story.

Instagram Live-While Insta will alert some of your followers that you are Live, I’m unsure if any non-followers would have access to your live feed…the bigger question is how they would know you are live?

Filters

Snapchat Half of the fun on Snapchat is the filters. From elf ears to voice changers, it’s an excellent way to add some interest and inject some humor into your story.

Instagram Stories has a couple of filters. You can add text, script, and stickers to your stories.

Facebook Live Be on the lookout for Facebook Live to add stickers and filters to Live soon! In September, they rolled out filters to Facebook Messenger, so I can only imagine, Live will have them soon too!  {AGAIN I can’t even get this thing published one day and there’s an update!}

Facebook Stories Facebook pushed Facebook Stories live to all users.  So those filters you could use in Messenger now appear at the top of the News feed…..so I was a little off my prediction of filters coming to FB Live…but kinda close 😉  Facebook Stories work very similar to Instagram stories.  I’ll be playing around with it today and let you know what I learn!

These are the current differences in storytelling platforms.  Thanks so much for following along over the past couple of weeks.  If you’ve learned something new, you think we should add, let me know!!! If you like the series, please share it!
