Shaw, an area that overlaps part of the U Street Corridor, is one of D.C.’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. Shaw is rich in both African American history and musical culture. The neighborhood is home to classics such as Lincoln Theatre and Howard Theater, and what is now a major D.C. music venue, the 9:30 Club. While this area is considered to be a historic district, Shaw is now becoming a widely sought after neighborhood for those looking to live in the city. The neighborhood is developing a fantastic food and shopping scene – restaurants and shops are popping up left and right, drawing everyone into the Shaw neighborhood to see what all the new hype is about. Additionally, it is in close proximity to D.C.’s City Center, giving the neighborhood a convenience factor as well.
_______________
Our Favorite Brunch Spot
Hazel, located in the Shaw neighborhood, is not your average brunch spot, but we think that makes it even better. With their Dim-Sunday menu, you will find different yet delicious dim sum brunch options such as Kimchi Scramble, a Duck Muffin with Baked Egg and Fire Panda Mayo, and Duck Confit Salad, just to name a few. The vibes inside Hazel are just as good as the menu – the restaurant features work from local and domestic artisans, giving it an extremely authentic feel. The environment is relaxed and servers here make it a point to ensure that you are enjoying your time, and have fun with you while doing so.
Our Favorite Happy Hour Spot
Shaw’s Tavern is a local spot we love for happy hour any night of the week. Happy hour at Shaw’s Tavern occurs Monday through Friday from 4:00pm – 7:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. Specials include $5 house wines and rail cocktails, select beers ranging from $3 – $5, and ½ priced select appetizers. Shaw’s Tavern has a Southern comfort feel to it, and the environment is relaxed and friendly – just what anyone needs for a casual happy hour to close out the day.
Best Place To Work Up A Sweat
One of Shaw’s best places to work out is Xtend Barre, a studio that mixes dance, ballet, and Pilates to give clients a tough workout that strengthens and lengthens the muscles. The instructors at Xtend Barre are welcoming, motivating, and are there to support you and your health and fitness goals. The studio is clean and cool, and it is in a great location in the Shaw neighborhood. The studio offers a great New Client Special – 2 classes for $35, and one month unlimited for $150. After your New Client Special is up, the studio offers both class packs and monthly-unlimited options.
Best Way To Get Around
Most everything you need is accessible by foot when living in Shaw. Restaurants, cafes and bars, shops, grocery stores, and businesses are all nearby. While it is easy and convenient to walk throughout the Shaw neighborhood, it is also conveniently located near both a Yellow and Green Line Metro Stop giving neighborhood residents easy access to anywhere within the District.
Neighborhood Lifestyle
Shaw has an eclectic mix of individuals – people who have been living here for as long as they can remember, and people just now discovering the neighborhood’s greatness. That being said, the neighborhood has a unique feel to it, encompassing the personalities, interests, and beliefs of all who live here. 9th and 7th street are becoming the trendy spots, with restaurants, bars, and cafes taking over the streets. While these new trends are emerging, Shaw has still managed to hold true to its musical and African American cultural roots.
What You Won’t Find
Because of it’s increasing popularity, peace and quiet is a neighborhood quality that you will likely not find in Shaw. Between all of the new restaurants and bars opening up and young individuals moving into the neighborhood, there is a constant hustle and bustle that will be hard to get away from. While this adds to the area’s appeal for some, others may feel a bit overwhelmed with the non-stop action. This flourishing neighborhood will keep you on your toes, and a sense of calm and quiet won’t be found here.
Living In Shaw
Living arrangements in Shaw range from row homes to luxury apartments to loft condominiums. With the population increasing, the housing options are increasing as well. The neighborhood is a historic district, so old Victorian row houses are scattered throughout the area. While these row houses are a beautiful aspect of the neighborhood, the need for apartments is rising, and this need is recognized. The Shay is an upscale apartment community in the Shaw neighborhood. The community is completely pet-friendly, and the units feature 9-foot ceilings, hardwood-style flooring, in-unit laundry and more. A rooftop pool, game room, and media lounge make this a true luxury community.
