Each year, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., people across the U.S. come together to honor his life and legacy by giving back to their communities. In Washington, DC, there are a number of ways to participate in the annual Day of Service. Here are some of the ways you can give back:
Help Beautify Our Local Parks
Join the Rock Creek Conservancy and the National Park Service in an Ivy removal effort at multiple sites within the city. Tools, gloves, bags and training will be provided.
Help Clean Up Local Waterways
Join Anacostia Riverkeeper at the Pope Branch Park in an effort to clean up trash and keep it from finding its way into the Anacostia River.
Participate In A Food Drive
Collect and drop off canned and non-perishable goods at the St. James’ Episcopal Church in Alexandria January 16th until noon, or any weekday from 9am – 1pm.
Brunch For A Good Cause
Brightest Young Things has rounded up a list of restaurants that will be donating the proceeds of inauguration week to local charities. If you’re going to brunch today or eat out this week, consider supporting one of these spots giving back to the community.
