Boston is a great city with plenty to do, but not everybody wants to live in the big, busy city. For those looking for suburban living with a reasonable commute into the city, there are tons of great Boston suburbs that many people call home. Lucky for you, we’ve highlighted what to do, where to eat, and where to live in our favorite Boston suburbs.

Lowell

Lowell, Massachusetts is the 4th largest city in the state and is about 30 miles north of Boston. What was once the center of the American Industrial Revolution, Lowell has now become a cultural hub attracting visitors from all over the country.

What to Do

Lowell was the manufacturing center for textiles and had a tremendous impact on the American Industrial Revolution. You can learn all about it at the Lowell National Historical Park. Canals and water powered textile mills were built by Irish immigrants and the mill workforce was primarily made up of 15-30 year old daughters of New England farmers, known as “Mill Girls”. In the warmer months, take a guided Trolley or Canal tour with a Park Ranger!

Where to Eat

Breakfast

Brew’d Awakening Coffeehaus is a great place to start to your day with one of their fresh cups of coffee and homey atmosphere. Try the classic egg, cheese, and meat sandwich where you can choose between bacon, sausage, or ham for under $4.00. They also have bagel sandwiches like the Veg Way with spinach, tomato, avocado, and hummus. Bonus: there is free wifi in the cafe, just ask for the daily password!

Lunch

If you are looking for a combination of delicious flavors and completely satisfying food, Life Alive is a must try. At Life Alive, everything on their menu is organic, therapeutic, and fresh and will leave your body feeling nourished after every visit. Try the Emperor Bowl or the Romantic Wrap and wash it down with one of their fresh squeezed juices or smoothies.

Dinner

Housed in a historic gentleman’s club built in the 1850’s, Cobblestones of Lowell has been serving classic American fare with exceptional craft brews and cocktails for years. Start off your meal with a bowl of New England Clam Chowder or a dozen oysters before moving onto the main course. There are vegetarian options like the Roasted Acorn Squash but many diners rave about the Prime Rib. No matter what you’re in the mood for, Cobblestones will be sure to satisfy your appetite.

Dessert

And now for our favorite meal of the day, dessert! Sweet Lydia’s has made S’mores into more than just your classic campfire dessert. What started out as care packages for family and friends has quickly evolved into a local favorite serving gourmet marshmallows and a variety of flavors of S’mores. The savory desserts are also available for delivery for your friends and family not lucky enough to live in Lowell!

Nashua

Nashua is the 2nd largest city in New Hampshire and is roughly 45 miles north of Boston. Due to the recent economic expansion in southern NH, Nashua has fully entrenched itself as one of the best Boston suburbs.

What to Do

Nashua is full of so many adventurous things to do that we couldn’t decide on one thing, so we have two recommendations. First head to SkyVenture to try Indoor Sky Diving with their manufactured wind tunnels producing speeds up to 150 mph. After you’ve shown off your skills, drive down the street to IncrediBREW for step by step instructions on brewing beer and wine making. Follow their own homemade recipes and then return a few weeks later to bottle your masterpiece and enjoy!

Where to Eat

Breakfast

The City Room Cafe is the go-to breakfast spot in Nashua. This cozy establishment is known for its great food, great service, and a friendly atmosphere. Their home fries are a fan favorite that pair perfectly with their variety of omelettes and breakfast classics.

Lunch

While Pressed Cafe is probably known more for its coffee, they have a long list of scrumptious sandwiches, paninis, soups, and salads. The Cilantro Lime Chicken panini and Strawberry Goat Cheese wrap are two great options, but you really can’t go wrong with Pressed’s creative blend of flavors.

Dinner

Surf Restaurant is the perfect place to dine in Nashua for fresh local seafood. Consistently voted the best seafood restaurant in New Hampshire, Surf serves their fresh, daily catch a variety of ways. Oysters on the half shell from the raw bar, a Wicked Tuna sushi roll, and a Flax and Quinoa Crusted Haddock are just a few different ways Surf will wow you with their combination of freshness and flavor.

Dessert

If you like to customize every aspect of your food, then Sub Zero Ice Cream should be your destination for dessert. First, choose what kind of milk your ice cream is made from to satisfy your taste or dietary needs, next choose from their standard or seasonal flavors, and lastly add your favorite ingredients to mix in! There is a location on the north and south end of town so you’ll never be far away!

Worcester

Worcester (pronounced “Woost’-er”) is the 2nd largest city in New England and is roughly 40 miles west of Boston. Embrace the arts in this very diverse city with traditionally ethnic neighborhoods scattered throughout the city.

What to Do

Worcester is centrally located in Massachusetts and has been nicknamed “The Heart of the Commonwealth”, but it should also be considered the heart of the cultural arts scene. Mechanics Hall is one of the oldest concert halls in the country and is celebrated for it’s pure acoustics and stunning decor. The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts brings Broadway acts, comedy shows, and other nationally recognized performers to the stage. Experiencing a show at each location is a must when in Worcester.

Where to Eat

Breakfast

Lou Roc’s Diner has been serving up huge portions of their popular breakfast dishes since the early 2000’s. You can see the diversity of the city reflected on the menu with Irish, Florentine, and Polish Eggs Benedict but we recommend getting the Big Breakfast. 2 eggs any style, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, home fries, and 2 pancakes or French toast all for just $8.50.

Lunch

If you’ve saved any room for lunch after that Big Breakfast, we recommend heading to the Flying Rhino Cafe for their cool and casual atmosphere. Flying Rhino’s eclectic menu has something for everyone ranging from plump, juicy burgers to soups and salads to even their own gluten-free menu. Make sure you follow them on Facebook for all the daily specials and secret menu items like the Epic Tusk!

Dinner

Worcester may be a little late to pick up the tapas and small plate trend that has taken over the restaurant scene nationwide, but they have one of the best in Bocado. Start off with a plate of fine meats and cheeses before selecting a few of their tasty tapas frias and tapas calientes like the fried avocado with spicy shrimp salad or the slow roasted duck leg with apricot pistachio glaze. Make sure you save room for one of their paellas, we recommend the seafood one!

Dessert

Sweet has a small savory menu of small plates for dinner but what sets Sweet apart from everywhere else is the dessert menu. Two of our favorites are the Banana’s Foster Spring Rolls with spiced rum caramel and vanilla ice cream or the Baked Alaska, a pineapple cake with coconut ice cream, meringue, and caramel rum pineapple. The head chef, Alina Eisenhauer, also makes custom cupcakes and cakes for any special occasion.
