Preparing and Decorating Your Apartment for Baby’s Arrival

Decorating your home while your bundle of joy is still on the way can be very exciting, yet demandable. Apart from providing your baby with basic stuff regarding food and clothes, you have to provide your newborn with a safe place to live in. When choosing baby stuff, make functionality a priority and forget about the pricey equipment. The room has to be practical and accessible to you and your spouse anytime, and that’s what matters the most. Here are some tips on how to prepare and decorate your apartment and welcome the baby the way it deserves.

The lighting

Lighting plays an important role. It would be great if the baby’s room was located at the brightest place in your apartment. Visual contact with the outside environment is extremely important for the psychological and social development of your child, so it’s desirable that the baby is able to see the outside world through the window. However, when placing a crib, pay attention that it’s opposite the window. In order to protect your child from sun exposure, place the shutters and a curtain. In addition to natural lighting, it’s also important to provide the soft night light. You can calm and soothe your baby to sleep with a lamp that has a music player with different sounds. The music automatically turns off after thirty minutes, so you won’t have to do it yourself.

Baby’s room

It’s best for both parents and the baby to have separate rooms since day one. It should be near your room so you can easily respond to your baby’s needs when needed. You have to be budget friendly so the elements like wardrobe, shelves and sofas can be used when they grow up. Don’t exaggerate with the unnecessary furniture since you’ll need only basic items for the first couple of months. A baby cot, a changing table, a rocking chair and a dresser is enough to start with, and it’s easy to add in other items later. A quality baby cot should be placed near the room entrance, so you won’t have to skip over anything while checking the baby in the middle of the night. The cot has to be simple and stable, with round edges so the baby can’t get injured. The most important thing is that the mattress is new, firm and of great quality. Avoid keeping the cot near the window, because you will probably air the room frequently, especially in wintertime when you heat the most. As for the furniture, choose the shape, style, color and design wisely so it can be used when the baby is older.

Clean your whole apartment, not just the baby’s room

A lot of cleaning and wiping has to be done before the baby’s arrival. The baby’s environment has to be sanitary and germ free, so you might as well want to hire a cleaning lady if you don’t have time to disinfect and vacuum the rooms. Do some decluttering as well, since you’ll need some empty storage space for baby’s clothes, diapers, hygiene products and other stuff. Since your baby will be carried around a lot, don’t forget to clean the living room and your bedroom as well.

Home Baby Proofing

Before you become a parent, you have to focus and be aware of every potential source of harm. Therefore, you’ll have to babyproof your home and make sure you have blocked all potential hazards from your baby’s reach. It can be a stressful task, but it’s totally worth it. First, start with the nursery because that’s where the baby will be most of its time. Make sure that there are no objects outside the crib that your baby could grab, swallow or hurt itself with. Tape down long electrical wires, appliance cords, and don’t forget to install childproof sockets on every outlet in the house. Kitchen cutlery, oscillating fans and heating appliances should be totally inaccessible to your child, so be smart before it’s too late.

Baby monitoring

Since you won’t be able to be by your baby’s side all the time, you’ll have to set up a baby monitoring system and keep track of your baby anywhere, anytime. These gadgets are lifesavers since you don’t have to be present around the baby, but you can always respond to its needs.

Your baby deserves to be raised in a healthy and safe environment and that’s exactly what you should be thinking of while decorating your cozy home. So, make some effort and your baby would be thankful and contented.
