One of Maddie’s best childhood memories revolves around the week she spent on a Dude Ranch in Arizona, riding horses, enjoying meals by the campfire and spotting javelina amongst the cacti. As adults, we can appreciate a whole other world of wonders; from tubing down the Salt River to sipping tequila while taking in a vibrant sunset, America’s fifth largest city is full of fun and discovery. Today we’re paying a virtual visit to the greater Phoenix area and putting a spotlight on a few of its great towns, or as we like to call them: Phoenix’s Finest.
Tempe
While this area is home to ASU and proud of it, it is so much more than just a college town. Rich in the arts, enthusiastic about heath and wellness and supportive of an active night life, this offbeat community has something for everyone.
What to Do
When in Tempe, there are a couple of no brainers when it comes to choosing how to spend your time. Feel the team spirit by taking in a Sun Devils football game or watching any number of games at one of Tempe’s many sports bars. If sports don’t do it for you, indulge your inner fashionista while taking care of the frugalista in you by visiting the Arizona Mills, an expansive and deeply discounted collection of outlets and department stores all under one roof. If you’re looking to nurture your inner artist, pay a visit to the ASU Gammage, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed performing arts center celebrating it’s 50th year. Need to tickle your funny bone? Head over to the Tempe Improv Comedy Theatre to check out their made-over state-of-the-art venue, complete with 450 seats, complete dinner menu and a killer Fall lineup.
Where to Dine
Head to downtown Tempe for a serious treat at the House of Tricks! This charming, award winning eatery is steps from the popular Mill Avenue but feels a world away from the hustle and bustle. Converted from a couple of neighboring historic homes by husband and wife Robin and Robert Trick, this one of a kind property keeps the charm coming with a garden on site, tended to each morning by Bob’s mother. Some menu favorites include the shaved brussel sprout appetizer and the burgundy braised short ribs. Whatever you decide to order, make sure you save room for dessert.
Where to Stay
Situate yourself within walking distance of Mill Avenue, Sun Devil stadium and the ASU campus at the Tempe Mission Palms. Guests here rave about the exceptional staff, awesome views, and well-appointed rooms, plus there’s a rooftop pool, tennis court and basketball court to help you unwind.
Stay a Little Longer
If you’re apartment hunting in the Tempe area, consider paying a visit to the Little Cottonwoods apartment community from MEB Management Services. Between the 3 pools, 2 spas, grilling area and 24-hour fitness center, you’ll feel more like you’ve stepped into a resort, but you’ll want to make yourself right at home in one of their unique and spacious apartments. The location is about as convenient as it gets with easy access to downtown, major highways, MSU and Kiwanis Park, with a private entrance to the neighborhood Stroud Park. Little Cottonwoods currently has a couple of great 2 bedroom units available, starting at $927/month. Bonus: They’re pet-friendly!
Keep in Mind
Downtown Tempe is buzzing with activity and is certainly the place to be, particularly on ASU game nights. Make sure to factor in traffic and potential road closures when you head out for dinner; if you’re anything like us, delaying dinner time or missing your reservation can often lead to a serious case of grumpy pants.
