What was once the heart of Washington’s African American community in the 20th century, U Street is now a revitalized, diverse, and lively art and music scene. The neighborhood is filled with musicians, artists, music clubs, restaurants, and shops. While it went through a bit of a slow period, the area is now constantly bustling with all sorts of life. The food and music scene draws in quite the crowd, and wandering through the streets of the U Street neighborhood will never disappoint.
_______________
Our Favorite Brunch Spot
Like every other DC neighborhood, U Street does not disappoint when it comes to its brunch scene. Local 16, known for having one of the best rooftops in D.C., is a happy hour and brunch hot spot. The Local 16 brunch experience is a unique one, featuring both your standard brunch as well as authentic Afghan entrees. Additionally, they offer a bottomless brunch for $27, which is an unbeatable deal. Bottomless brunch goers can enjoy one entree as well as the option for a bottomless drink of choice. The lively atmosphere combined with the unique yet delicious menu and the incredible bottomless deal will lead to a very fun Brunch experience.
Our Favorite Happy Hour Spot
While you could wander into any bar or restaurant on U Street and likely find a fantastic happy hour, our favorite spot right now is Vinoteca. This wine bar and bistro located in the U Street neighborhood offers a fabulous happy hour from 5pm-7pm daily. A selection of 15 different wines and Peroni drafts are just $5, and there is a selection of small plates with happy hour prices as well. Vinoteca occasionally features Charity Happy Hours on Wednesday’s, giving guests an extended happy hour in exchange for a donation to the cause of choice. You can’t beat a happy hour for a cause!
Best Place To Work Up A Sweat
While great eats and drinks are always important, an enjoyable and challenging place to get your sweat on is crucial. At Vida Fitness, members can enjoy group exercise classes, over 100 cardio machines, various weight training areas, TRX, personal training, and much more. The U Street location happens to be home to the Penthouse Pool and Lounge, which is located on the rooftop with incredible DC views. The facility has all that you need and more, all while offering a luxurious feel and top of the line staff.
Best Way To Get Around
Metro, bus lines, and walking tend to be the most common mode of transportation for U Street residents. When commuting within the neighborhood, you will rarely need to do anything other than walk. There are countless restaurants, bars, and
entertainment options all within walking distance for those living in the Corridor. Additionally, the Green and Yellow metro lines are within close proximity to the neighborhood as well, allowing for an easy commute regardless of where you need to go.
Neighborhood Lifestyle
U Street is known for its diversity. While it was once the heart of Washington’s African American community, it is now a melting pot of cultures. This is expressed through the neighborhood’s music, food, and entertainment options, as well as the overall vibe you will feel when wandering the streets of the Corridor. While the common theme throughout the neighborhood is artists and musicians, there are all sorts of professionals scattered throughout as well. The neighborhood truly has it all, which is what makes it so special.
What You Won’t Find
One thing that some may find lacking in the U Street area is space for some peace and quiet. While the area is known for its hustle and bustle and active nightlife, there are indeed a couple of green spaces nearby that balance out this dynamic. Check out Meridian Hill Park and Logan Circle for a lovely city escape of sorts.
Living In The U Street Corridor
Because of its greatness, living in the U Street Corridor neighborhood is not cheap. The neighborhood has a variety of apartment options including renovated row homes, loft apartments, and newly built apartment complexes. The culture and environment of the neighborhood combined with its convenience and close proximity to nearly everything you may need leads to high demand and high prices. That being said, the apartments that are available are one of kind. Living in the U Street Corridor is an unbeatable experience. We love the U Street area for both its past and its present. The neighborhood has come a long way, and it has adapted to such a wide variety of cultures and ideas along the way. With its growth, it has established a neighborhood entertainment and opportunity, all while holding true to its roots.
