SouthEast DC is on the rise, and we have neighborhoods like Anacostia to thank for that. Located east of the Anacostia River, this up and coming neighborhood has a lot of potential. Anacostia is one of the District’s more historical neighborhoods, mostly known for its African American history. In addition to its historical aspects, Anacostia is one of D.C.’s more scenic because of its location right along the Anacostia River. The Riverwalk runs all through the neighborhood and provides running paths and scenic views for residents. Anacostia’s food and entertainment scenes are on the rise as well as more and more restaurants and bars begin to trickle into the neighborhood.
_______________
Our Favorite Brunch Spot
The Art-Drenaline Cafe, located in Anacostia, is one of the neighborhood’s greatest brunch spots. The café is located inside of the Art Center and is known for its delicious brunch and it’s cozy and comfortable atmosphere. The ingredients used here are always fresh, the service is quick and friendly, and you truly feel a part of the Anacostia community when dining here. With brunch items ranging from Shrimp and Grits to Waffles to an Omelet Bar, there are delicious options for everyone. This local hot spot is one you definitely do not want to miss out on.
Our Favorite Happy Hour Spot
An Anacostia favorite and a go-to happy hour spot is Cheers At The Big Chair. With views of Anacostia’s landmark “Big Chair”, Cheers has been a staple restaurant and a local hangout for the neighborhood for quite some time. They offer happy hour daily from 4:00PM – 7:00PM. The bar menu consists of small plates ranging in price from $3 to $6. Some of our favorites are the loaded fries and the grilled cheese. The drink deals vary daily but never disappoint. The laid-back, neighborhood feel of Cheers always makes for the perfect Happy Hour any day of the week.
Best Place To Work Up A Sweat
While not located directly in Anacostia, Vida Fitness at the Yards is just a quick drive away, and one of our favorite places to sweat. Vida Fitness has several locations throughout D.C., and the Yards location is just minutes away from Anacostia. At Vida Fitness, members can enjoy group exercise classes, over 100 cardio machines, various weight training areas, TRX, personal training, and much more. Additionally, there is a rooftop pool and lounge, a spa, hair salon, and a “fuel bar”. The gym has locker rooms, a sauna, and a steam room as well – they pretty much have it all. It is truly worth the short commute from Anacostia to the Yards to get your sweat on out at Vida Fitness.
Best Way To Get Around
While Anacostia is one of D.C.’s less favorable neighborhoods for walking, they have great public transportation options and traveling by car is accessible as well. With 24 bus lines and one metro line throughout Anacostia, public transportation is typically the easiest means of getting around when living in Anacostia. The neighborhood has its own metro stop on the Green Line, located centrally in the neighborhood. Traveling by car through Anacostia is equally convenient. Parking is not as big of an issue here as in other D.C. neighborhoods, as street parking is almost always available. Because of this, many residents here rely on personal vehicles for getting around.
Neighborhood Lifestyle
Anacostia is a unique and historic D.C. neighborhood, and it’s residents take pride in this. Because of the development that is occurring in Anacostia, there is excitement and anticipation for what is to come all throughout the neighborhood. With historic row houses and Victorian homes, there is a quaint and friendly neighborhood feel to it as well. While things continue to grow, holding true to it’s uniqueness will be a challenge, but residents are determined to maintain the current feel of the neighborhood.
Living In Anacostia
The living situation in Anacostia is a mix between row houses, historic Victorian homes, and apartment buildings. With development on the rise, apartment complexes will likely become the most popular living arrangement. One notable apartment complex in Anacostia is Sheridan Station. This LEED Platinum Certified apartment complex is located minutes away from downtown Anacostia, and just a quick trip away from the rest of the District. One, two, and three bedroom floorplans are available all of which have incredible apartment amenities and access to the community amenities as well. Walk-in closets, outdoor terraces, wood flooring, and spacious floor plans are some of our favorite apartment amenities. The central location, fitness center, and green roof make this pet-friendly community even better. With the neighborhood on the rise, Sheridan Station is a great place to call home in Anacostia.
