Chicago: The Jewel of the Midwest

Chicago: The Jewel of the Midwest

Chicago is often referred to as “The Jewel of the Midwest” due to the abundance of tourist attractions scattered throughout the city. Combine that with the eclectic cuisine and state of the art apartment communities, it’s easy to see why Chicago is the third largest city in the U.S. While there are plenty of great places to live in Chicago, these 3 historic neighborhoods encompass the history of the city perfectly and are a perfect place to call home.

Gold Coast/Old Town

The historic Gold Coast has long been home to some of the wealthiest people in the country. What draws visitors and residents here are the nightlife, great food, and proximity to both Lake Michigan and the business district.

What to Do

Navy Pier is within walking distance of the Gold Coast neighborhood and has something for people of all ages. Prepare to stay all day as you visit fair attractions like the giant Ferris Wheel, catch a show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, or grab a cold one at the Landshark Beer Garden. If the weather is nice, make sure you take a boat tour on Lake Michigan to see the Chicago skyline from a different perspective.

Where to Eat

Lunch

Bistrot Zinc has a warm, cozy neighborhood vibe that makes visitors feel like they’re sitting at a bistro in Paris. Order classic french inspired soups, salads, and sandwiches or choose the half soup and half sandwich to get a taste of both. Favorites include the Croque Monsieur and the Baked Onion Soup.

Dinner

The Pump Room opened in 1938 and is one of Chicago’s most iconic restaurants having hosted celebs like Frank Sinatra and Queen Elizabeth II. Renovated in 2011, new award winning chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten has reinvented classic menu items from the old days and has incorporated his own modern twists. Enjoy delicious Flatbreads or classic entrees like the Seared Salmon with corn pudding.

Dessert

Sprinkles Cupcakes offers a variety of rotating cupcake flavors throughout the year. While they also have ice cream and cookies, the cupcake flavors like Red Velvet and Chocolate Marshmallow truly do take the cake. Bonus: There is a cupcake ATM if you arrive after they close at 9:00 PM.

Where to Stay

The Sofitel Chicago Water Tower Hotel is just steps away from all the action in the Gold Coast and Old Town Chicago. This luxury hotel in a glass high rise building has modern stylish rooms featuring flat screens, 24 hour room service, and beautiful city views.

Stay a Little Longer

Looking for a luxurious apartment building with all the amenities you could dream of? Look no further than the 100 West Chestnut Apartments. Rooms are equipped with hardwood style flooring, granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, and spacious closets. With a superior location, amenities, and views, these pet friendly apartments are second to none.

Keep in Mind

Make sure you take a walk down the Magnificent Mile, an upscale region of Michigan Avenue comparable to 5th Ave. in New York and the Champs-Elysses in Paris. Lined with more than 460 stores, 275 restaurants, 60 hotels, and unique entertainment options, the “Mag Mile” has something that will accommodate every visitors wants and desires.

Hyde Park

Located on the south side of Chicago roughly 6 miles from the Loop, Hyde Park combines the convenience of city life with the greenery expected in a suburban environment. Numerous shops, restaurants, and parks line the streets to cater to residents and nearby students at University of Chicago.

What to Do

A trip to Hyde Park would not be complete without visiting Promontory Point. Many couples choose to get married on this man made peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan and offers visitors beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.

Lunch

Plein Air Cafe is located on University of Chicago’s campus next to the historic Robie House. This French cafe is a perfect place to enjoy coffee and food in a warm, serene environment. Choose between delicious sandwiches and salads with European twists or try one of their famous pies!

Dinner

If you come to Hyde Park, you must visit the staple restaurant in the neighborhood: Medici on 57th. This BYOB (or wine!) establishment cooks up scrumptious pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and entrees. The exposed brick and old wooden tables, which have been carved into by patrons for years, helps create a warm atmosphere.

Keep in Mind

The prestigious University of Chicago is located in Hyde Park and it would be a mistake not to tour the campus designed with Gothic spires. Start your tour at the Henry Moore statue, pass through the Hull Gate, and reach the Reynolds Clubhouse where you can grab a drink and relax. Other must sees on campus include the Bond Chapel and the Midway Plaisance, the former site of the World’s Fair.

The Loop/Lakeshore East

Millions of visitors flock to Chicago every year with some spending their entire trip in The Loop. Situated downtown, you can experience towering skyscrapers, numerous pieces of public art, and beautiful parks all in one location.

What to Do

The Loop is home to so many exciting things to do but you must visit the city’s “front yard”. Grant Park is a 319 acre park filled with notable landmarks like Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, Museum Campus, and Soldier Field. Last but not least, it’s also home to the recently named #1 museum in the world, the Art Institute of Chicago.

Dessert

Dessert is our favorite meal of the day and Mindy’s Hot Chocolate reminds us why that is with the “OG” Doughnuts. Dip the fluffy brioche doughnuts in hot fudge and top it off with caramel corn and you will be in heaven!
